NYS Graduation Requirements
NYS Graduation Requirements
New York State's high school graduation requirements are designed to ensure that students receive a well-rounded and rigorous education, preparing them for success in both college and career pathways. The state mandates a minimum of 22 credits for graduation, including four credits in English language arts, four in mathematics, four in social studies, and three in science. Additionally, students must complete one credit in arts, one in languages other than English, and a half-credit in health education. The curriculum is aligned with the New York State Learning Standards, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills. Beyond academic achievements, students are also required to participate in the Regents Examinations or alternative assessments in English language arts, mathematics, and science to demonstrate their proficiency. These graduation requirements reflect the state's commitment to fostering well-rounded, knowledgeable, and skilled individuals equipped for the challenges of the future.
Important Information
-
The NYSSB recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and one or more world languages. The intent of the NYSSB is to encourage the study of languages, to identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, to provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and placement, to prepare students with twenty-first century skills, to recognize the value of language instruction, and to affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society. Successful candidates will earn three points in English and three points in each world language from a points matrix, which includes course grades, national and state exams, transcripts, and culminating projects. The NYSSB takes the form of a Seal on the student's diploma and a medallion worn at graduation.

The New York State Board of Regents is committed to civic education that empowers all students to make informed decisions for the public good as members of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. Civic education facilitates the development of civic competencies, which are needed for a democratic society to flourish. Through civic education, students learn how to identify and address problems in their community or school community. Students also learn how to demonstrate respect for the rights of others, respectfully disagree with other viewpoints, and provide evidence for a counterargument. Civic education can strengthen the relationships of schools and students with parents, families, civic leaders, and organizations and community partners.
