The ENL (English as a New Language) Department supports students who are developing English proficiency while ensuring they have meaningful access to the full educational program. Our goal is to help Multilingual Learners (MLLs) develop the academic English skills they need to succeed across all content areas while building confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
ENL teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to provide targeted language instruction, appropriate scaffolds, and support that allows students to engage with grade-level content. Supporting our Multilingual Learners is a shared responsibility, and all teachers play an important role in creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment.

ENL Proficiency Levels/New York WIDA ACCESS Testing
In New York State, ENL/ELL students are classified by their level of English language proficiency, based primarily on the NYSITELL (initial identification) and WIDA (annual assessment).
NYS ELL/ENL Proficiency Levels
- Entering - Student is beginning to develop English and relies heavily on supports to understand and communicate.
- Emerging - Student can understand and use some English but still requires substantial language support.
- Transitioning - Student has developing academic English skills and can participate more independently, but continues to need targeted support.
- Expanding - Student demonstrates stronger English proficiency and can handle increasingly complex academic language with less support.
- Commanding - Student demonstrates a high level of English proficiency and is generally able to access the academic program with minimal language support. When a student reaches the commanding level, they will continue to receive services for two additional years before exiting the ENL program.

For ENL/ELL families, ParentSquare can be an important tool for maintaining clear and consistent communication between the school and home. Depending on the family's language preferences and the message settings available, communications may also be translated to help families better understand important school information.

The maximum allowable grade span for grouping instruction in grades K-12 English as a New Language or Bilingual Education classes is two contiguous grades, except for English Language Learners in a Special Education class, as defined by section 200.1(uu) of this Title. All programs must be provided during the school day.
* Other services that are approved by the NYS Commissioner that monitor and support the student's language development and academic progress.
Core Content Area shall mean ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. One unit of study = 180 minutes of instruction per week per year.

Home to both the largest and smallest suburban school districts, Long Island is a demographically and linguistically diverse region reporting over 44,000 English Language Learners who speak nearly 100 different languages. The L.I. RBERN catchment area includes both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and it serves all 125 public school districts and 7 charter schools on Long Island.

Estos glosarios pueden descargarse, imprimirse y difundirse a educadores, padres y estudiantes de educación y aprendizaje de la lengua intelectual (ELLs/MLLs).
La Red Regional de Recursos Educativos Bilingües de Long Island (L.I. RBERN) está administrada por Eastern Suffolk BOCES y financiada mediante un contrato con el Departamento de Educación del Estado de Nueva York, Oficina de Educación Bilingüe y Lenguas Internacionales.

La cuenca de influencia de L.I. RBERN incluye tanto los condados de Nassau como de Suffolk, y atiende a los 125 distritos escolares públicos y 7 escuelas concertadas de Long Island.
