Centre Avenue students learn to “Live Joyfully” through disability inclusion

Students at Centre Avenue Elementary School recently learned an important lesson about kindness, empathy and embracing differences during a special assembly presented by author and disability inclusion advocate Nicole Zeitzer Johnson.
Zeitzer Johnson is the author of the children’s book “Joyfully Josie,” inspired by her daughter, Josie, who was born with FOXG1 syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Through her book and her organization, Live Joyfully Education, she works to promote disability awareness and inclusion among students and educators.
The assembly began with Zeitzer Johnson sharing Josie’s story and explaining how FOXG1 syndrome affects her daily life. Although Josie cannot walk, speak or eat independently, she understands those around her and communicates using assistive technology, including buttons that allow her to answer “yes” or “no.”
Zeitzer Johnson then read “Joyfully Josie,” which follows her daughter on a visit to the park, where she meets a young boy who is initially unsure how to interact with her. As he learns more about Josie’s disability, his uncertainty gives way to understanding, and he discovers that they can enjoy playing together despite their differences.
Following the reading, Zeitzer Johnson led a discussion about the importance of recognizing and respecting what makes each person unique. She explained that children with disabilities face a greater risk of bullying, often because their peers do not understand their differences. By replacing uncertainty with curiosity, empathy and understanding, students can help create a more welcoming environment for everyone.
Throughout the assembly, students explored what it means to be kind, inclusive and accepting of others, regardless of their abilities. The presentation concluded with a thoughtful question-and-answer session, during which Centre Avenue students demonstrated their curiosity and compassion through insightful questions.
The assembly reinforced a simple but powerful message: Differences should never stand in the way of friendship, and everyone deserves to feel included.
