As college application deadlines approach, East Rockaway High School’s Guidance Department and ELA teachers have teamed up to give seniors something they need most: time. Through “Future Fridays,” students receive dedicated class time and personalized support as they work through college applications and prepare for life after graduation.

Launched two years ago by Director of Guidance John Madden, Future Fridays grew directly from student feedback. Seniors were feeling overwhelmed by the demands of the modern college application process, from maintaining strong grades and preparing for standardized tests to building extracurricular portfolios and completing increasingly detailed applications. When the district asked how it could help ease some of that pressure, Future Fridays emerged as a solution.

For five consecutive Fridays this fall, senior English periods are transformed into dedicated college and career planning sessions. Students use the protected time to work on college essays and applications, apply for financial aid, build resumes, prepare military applications, explore online job opportunities or tackle whatever other tasks they need to complete their post-graduation plans.

Teachers and guidance counselors are available throughout each session to answer questions, offer feedback and help students navigate the process.

The timing is intentional. The goal is for students to complete their Common Applications before the free SUNY application week, when application fees are waived, giving seniors another opportunity to apply to SUNY colleges without the added financial barrier.

According to Madden, Future Fridays offer benefits that extend beyond giving students extra time to complete applications. By creating a dedicated space for students to work through the logistics of the process, the program also helps reduce stress and allows individual guidance meetings to become more focused and personalized.

Rather than using counseling appointments to work through application checklists, counselors can spend that time helping students think through their individual goals, options and next steps.

For East Rockaway seniors, Future Fridays provide a practical reminder that preparing for life after high school is a process, not a single deadline. Whether students are headed to college, the military or the workforce, they have dedicated time, resources and people in their corner to help them get there.
