Resources for National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among youth ages 10–14 in the U.S. and the 3rd leading cause among young people ages 15–24.
One of the most important protective factors for young people is having a connection with at least one trusted adult. As educators, administrators, and school staff, we are in a unique position to be that person for a student. A simple check-in, noticing a change in behavior, taking the time to listen, or helping a student connect with support can have a lasting impact.
Tuesday, September 8th is 988 Day: a national, annual initiative dedicated to reducing stigma and spreading awareness about the 24/7, free, confidential 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, while emphasizing the importance of mental health and suicide prevention.
This year’s theme for 988 Day 2026 is 988 Reasons: Your reason is reason enough. This theme is a reminder that you don’t have to be in crisis to reach out to 988. Whatever you’re facing, your reason for seeking support is reason enough.
You can CALL or TEXT 988 to connect with a skilled counselor. You can also CHAT through the 988 Lifeline website. You can reach out for yourself, a friend, a loved one, or someone you are concerned about.
What happens when you reach out to 988?
-
A skilled 988 counselor will listen without judgment and help guide the conversation, even if you don’t know where to start.
-
You don’t have to give your name or share anything you’re not ready to share.
-
After asking about your safety, your counselor will listen, provide calm and supportive assistance, and share resources that may be helpful.
What's happening at ERHS?
-
On 9/8, during lunch periods, 4 through 7, all students and staff are invited to stop by the Rotunda and visit with our Support Staff to gain knowledge, ask questions, and pick up free 988 materials, including stickers, magnets, keychains, window clings, wallet cards, and more!
-
Please wear purple or blue on 9/8 to show your support!
-
Throughout September, we are sharing daily morning announcements with studentsfocused on suicide prevention and awareness, help-seeking, trusted adults, and available mental health resources. You can view the morning announcement slides by clicking here.
If you notice a student who appears to be struggling, or if a student shares something that causes you concern, please reach out to a member of our ERHS mental health staff.
