East Rockaway community celebrates literacy with an evening of stories, milestones and connection

The East Rockaway community came together in the name of literacy on Apr. 23 at the district's annual Family Literacy Night – an evening that wove together student recognition, hands-on activities and an inspiring keynote to celebrate the power of reading and writing at every age.
Hosted by Director of Humanities Ms. Kristin Anisis, the event kicked off in the East Rockaway High School auditorium with a milestone celebration, as students from across the district were recognized for reaching their literacy goals. The evening's keynote speaker, YA author Paul Volponi, then took the stage to deliver a talk that was equal parts candid and motivating – sharing how he went from a reluctant reader as a child to the published author of more than 20 books. Mr. Volponi had also spent part of the day leading writing workshops for East Rockaway Middle/High School students, making his presence a throughline for the entire day.
Following the auditorium program, attendees spread out into individual classrooms for a series of interactive sessions designed to spotlight the district's literacy initiatives and spark enthusiasm for reading. ERHS teacher Jennifer Isik led a writing circle rooted in HerStory pedagogy, guiding participants through personal essay writing. A craft corner offered bookmark-making, representatives from the East Rockaway Public Library hosted a book tasting, and an author scavenger hunt kept students engaged and moving throughout the building. Pizza and snacks, sold by HOSA members and the Class of 2028, kept the energy up through the evening.
From milestone awards to writing circles to a library book tasting, Wednesday's event offered something for every reader – and served as a reminder that when a community shows up for literacy, students take notice.
