East Rockaway Board of Education convenes for March meeting

The East Rockaway Board of Education convened on Mar. 24, with ninth grader Eric Chen opening the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
Community members were reminded that Multicultural Night will be held on Tuesday, Mar. 31 at 6:00 p.m. at East Rockaway High School.
District Realignment Plan
Superintendent James DeTommaso provided an update on the district realignment planning process, noting that committee meetings had been delayed due to snow days and other scheduling disruptions. Despite those setbacks, he reported that the subcommittees are making strong progress.
A key date to mark: Thursday, Apr. 16 will be a public forum at which the district will present a comparison of the Princeton Plan against other configurations, along with a full financial analysis. A question-and-answer period will follow. Based on community feedback, the board will then determine whether to move forward with a plan or consider alternatives.
Mr. DeTommaso emphasized that no decisions have been made and asked the community to keep an open mind and engage fully with the Apr.16 presentation before drawing conclusions.
Proposition 2
Assistant Superintendent Michael Van Wart presented information on Proposition 2, which will appear on this year's school budget ballot. The proposition would authorize the use of existing capital reserves, which are funds already set aside by the district, for extensive renovation work, primarily focused on the middle school wing. Planned work includes roof repairs, HVAC upgrades and exterior fascia improvements. The authorization would not exceed $1.6 million, with any unused funds returned to the reserve. If the proposition passes, it will have no impact on taxpayers.
Other Business
Mr. DeTommaso announced that the Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee (SSAC) will present a report at the Apr. 28 Board of Education meeting.
The superintendent also recognized the success of the 90th anniversary of Rock Rivalry, which received coverage on News 12, and thanked all who contributed to making the milestone celebration a memorable one.
Several community members used the open mic period to raise questions about the District Realignment Plan.
