East Rockaway High School marks P.S. I Love You Day with Be the Light theme

On Feb. 13, peer leaders at East Rockaway High School proudly sponsored P.S. I Love You Day, joining schools across Long Island and throughout New York State in a unified show of compassion and mental health awareness.
P.S. I Love You Day was founded by West Islip High School alumni Brooke and Jaimie DiPalma as a tribute following the tragic loss of their father – whose final words were I love you. Those words became the foundation of a movement dedicated to spreading love, hope and connection, and to ending the stigma surrounding mental health. At its core, the initiative carries a simple but powerful message: you are never alone.
This year's theme, Be the Light, encouraged students and staff to reach out, listen and be present for those who may be struggling – a reminder that even the smallest gestures of kindness can illuminate someone's darkest moments.
At ERHS, a series of thoughtful activities brought the theme to life. Students and staff were invited to wear purple in solidarity and visit the school's rotunda during lunch periods, where school social worker Mrs. Amy Weissman Canale and counselor Mrs. Jennifer Melecio hosted interactive activities centered on self-worth and affirmation. One activity asked participants to complete the prompt I am important because… on a paper heart. The responses are now displayed throughout the rotunda, forming a vibrant purple gallery that reflects the value and uniqueness each individual brings to the ERHS community.
Students were also given P.S. I Love You hearts to pass along to someone who might need a boost, each one carrying the message: This little heart is a sweet reminder you are loved. Once you feel happy and strong, pass it on to a friend who needs a hug-on-the-go! Additionally, 988 magnets were distributed for lockers and home refrigerators, raising awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and educating students about warning signs of youth suicide. Staff members capped the day with a purple group photo bearing the collective message: You are never alone. You are enough. Mental health matters.
The East Rockaway school district remains committed to ensuring every student has access to the support they need. Students concerned about a friend, or who would like support themselves, are encouraged to reach out to their school counselor, social worker psychologist. In times of crisis, help is always available by calling or texting 988, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
