East Rockaway marine biology students dive deep into squid dissection
East Rockaway High School marine biology students recently rolled up their sleeves for an unforgettable hands-on learning experience: dissecting squid to explore the intricate anatomy of these fascinating creatures.
Led by the ERHS science chairperson, Ms. Jennifer Belfiore, and science teacher, Mr. Brian Crowley, students in the marine biology class had spent the previous day studying the interior and exterior anatomy of the squid's body in preparation for the dissection lab.
Ms. Belfiore guided students through the dissection process, emphasizing how this scientific skill extends far beyond the research laboratory, but into other career paths as well, including food services and cooking.
Throughout the lab, students carefully explored the squid's internal organs, examining each structure and its function. The highlight of the lesson came at the end, when students removed the squid's pen – a cartilage-like structure that holds the ink squid use to defend themselves against threats. Students discovered they could actually use the pen to write their names on paper, bringing the anatomy lesson full circle.
While students were equal parts fascinated and “grossed-out” during the dissection, they remained fully engaged in the hands-on experience. By the end of class, they had gained valuable insights into marine biology and developed practical laboratory skills that will serve them well in future scientific endeavors.
