East Rockaway Board of Education Holds January Meeting

The East Rockaway Board of Education held its regular January meeting on Jan. 13 in the East Rockaway High School auditorium.
Centre Avenue first grader Ethan Rodriguez had the honor of leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Ethan was selected for this role after receiving the school's "Better Together" award for his willingness to help custodians clean up the lunchroom, demonstrating the kind of community spirit the district values.
Students Shine in Andrew J. Stern Essay Contest
Three East Rockaway students were recognized for their winning essays in the annual Andrew J. Stern Essay Contest. Each student read their work aloud to the board and audience members.
This year's thought-provoking theme challenged students to consider "How did 9/11 change the way technology is used for public safety?" The winners represented each division: Julia Santos took top honors in the elementary category, Emily Chimborazo won the junior high division, and Danilynn Fardella earned first place in the high school division.
Tenure Recommendation Announced
Centre Avenue Principal Calia Kelly presented a tenure recommendation for fifth grade teacher Kirsten Scalercio, praising her dedication and impact on students. "Our students are better because of you," Ms. Kelly told Ms. Scalercio during the announcement.
Updated Curriculum Resources Now Available
Superintendent James DeTommaso announced that the district's English Language Arts curriculum guides have been updated and are now accessible to families online. The comprehensive guides, along with supporting resources, can be found on the district website at this district website link.
New Academic Support Initiative Launches at High School
Mr. DeTommaso shared that East Rockaway High School is piloting an innovative academic support program designed to help students who need extra assistance. The program features learning centers that offer targeted support in ELA and math during lunch periods, making it convenient for students to access help without disrupting their regular class schedules.
The district is already looking ahead to expand this model, with administrators working to develop a plan for implementing similar support structures at the elementary school level.
Facilities Work Continues at Centre Avenue
Assistant Superintendent Michael Van Wart provided an update on ongoing facilities improvements. The initial phase of oil tank remediation work at Centre Avenue School has been completed. The project will now move into its next phase, which will involve additional environmental testing of the athletic fields at Centre Avenue.
Update on the District Realignment Plan
Mr. DeTommaso offered a detailed update on the district's proposed school realignment plan, which would reshape the configuration of elementary schools beginning in the 2027-28 school year if approved.
The superintendent reported that he has been holding productive meetings with staff members and administrators to develop a comprehensive plan that will be presented to the community. Under the current proposal being discussed, Centre Avenue School would house students in grades K-3 with Calia Kelly continuing as principal. Rhame Avenue School would serve grades 4-6 with Jack Bixhorn as principal. To minimize disruption, clerical and custodial staff members would remain in the buildings where they are currently employed.
Recognizing that transportation is a major concern for families, the district is actively researching shuttle service options to help address potential logistical challenges. A dedicated sub-committee has been formed to focus exclusively on transportation planning and solutions.
The collaborative planning process continues with the next meeting of staff scheduled for Jan. 28. Mr. DeTommaso emphasized that more detailed information will be shared as the plan develops, with community forums for parents and residents expected to begin in the spring. These forums will provide opportunities for families to learn about the proposal, ask questions, and share feedback before any decisions are made.
Student and School Updates
Student Board member Sofia Ferkov delivered her monthly report to the board, followed by news and updates from across the district's schools shared during Mr. DeTommaso's superintendent's report.
Community Input
During the public comment portion of the meeting, several community members took the opportunity to speak, with questions focused primarily on the proposed realignment plan.
