Centre Avenue transforms handprints into powerful anti-bullying message

School districts across the nation are wearing orange today in celebration of Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. Throughout East Rockaway, students and staff wore the symbolic color to demonstrate their commitment to kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
At Centre Avenue Elementary School, the counseling department spearheaded a creative, school-wide initiative designed to bring students together in a powerful stand against bullying. The project's central message is clear: we are better together.
In art classes leading up to Unity Day, students participated in a hands-on project that combined creativity with purpose. Each student traced their hand on orange construction paper, cut it out and decorated it with intricate patterned designs inspired by Mehndi – the traditional art of creating decorative designs on skin with henna.
These individual handprints were then assembled into Unity Trees, with one tree created for each grade level. The vibrant displays now adorn the building, serving as visual reminders of the strength found in unity and mutual respect.
In a gesture that underscores the school's commitment to community, Centre Avenue created an additional Unity Tree representing the entire school. This special tree includes handprints from every class, along with contributions from Principal Mrs. Kelly, special area teachers, custodians and all staff members. The comprehensive display is prominently featured in the main hallway, where it will greet students, staff and visitors alike.
The Unity Day celebration reflects East Rockaway's broader dedication to fostering a positive school climate where every student feels valued and safe. By engaging students in meaningful activities that promote empathy and collective responsibility, the district is building a culture where bullying has no place.
